Start the New Year with Fish

We asked Head Chef John Carty about his advice on food for the New Year

"Start the New Year Fresh: Add Fish to Your Diet!

Now that we’ve all set our New Year’s resolutions, why not make a commitment to healthier eating by adding more fish to your diet? Living on this incredible island of Ireland, we’re fortunate to have some of the freshest fish available, with trawlers offloading daily at Howth Harbour—just a stone’s throw from Howth Castle Cookery School.

A healthy, balanced diet should include at least two portions of fish per week, including one portion of oily fish. Fish and shellfish are rich sources of essential vitamins and minerals, while oily fish—like salmon and sardines—are packed with long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to heart health.

Why Add Fish to Your Plate?

Oily Fish Benefits:
- High in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which may help prevent heart disease
- A good source of vitamin D for healthy bones and immunity
- Some (like canned sardines, pilchards, and tinned salmon) provide edible bones, offering a boost of calcium and phosphorus for strong bones

White Fish Benefits:
- Naturally low in fat, making them a lean alternative to red or processed meats
- Certain species (e.g., sea bass, sea bream, and halibut) are a modest source of omega-3 fatty acids

Examples of white fish include cod, haddock, plaice, and pollock, all of which are versatile and easy to cook.
